At Trips For Kids Ottawa, our skating sessions go beyond the basics of learning to skate—they cultivate confidence, foster community, and inspire leadership. With careful preparation from our team, each session is designed to ensure every participant feels welcomed, supported, and ready to step onto the ice.
Our journey begins days before the first skate session. Each participant is individually fitted for skates and helmets, often for the first time. It’s more than just sizing—it’s a chance to establish trust and ease nerves. The TFKO team guides them through the essentials: how to handle their skates safely, what surfaces they can walk on, and most importantly, how to tie their skates properly. These small but crucial steps help participants feel prepared before setting foot on the ice.
On the day of the session, the energy is electric. In the dressing room, skaters—some excited, some a little nervous—lace up with the help of our experienced volunteers. New skaters are taught to find their balance by keeping their hands on their knees, which prevents backward falls and keeps them steady as they take their first steps. Experienced skaters step up as mentors, offering tips and encouragement when needed.

From the dressing room to the ice—learning to balance with hands on knees, a key first step to stability.
A highlight of our program is seeing the progression—first hesitant steps become confident glides. Second-year skaters gain independence, mentors emerge, and friendships are formed. By the end of each session, the rink isn’t just a place to skate—it’s a space where young girls learn to believe in themselves, celebrate small victories, and embrace new challenges with courage.

Unlike traditional sports programs that emphasize competition, our focus is on recreation, connection, and personal growth. Through skating, participants develop physical skills, resilience, and self-assurance. By eliminating barriers to participation and providing all necessary equipment, we create an inclusive space where every girl feels valued and empowered.
Through the combined efforts of our volunteers, staff, and participants, every session is a memorable and meaningful experience, creating lasting impacts that extend far beyond the ice.
