Volunteer Spotlight: Gary Winger

Gary first connected with Trips for Kids Ottawa through a friend who was already volunteering and thought it might be a good fit. What began as the occasional night helping when extra support was needed quickly became something more consistent.
He kept coming back — in part because volunteers were needed, but mostly because he was enjoying it.

For Gary, volunteering is a simple way to share something he already loves. Time on the trails, being outdoors, and riding bikes — experiences that not every young person has easy access to.
“It’s a great way to share my love of mountain biking and being out in nature with youth that may not otherwise have that opportunity.”
What stands out most to him isn’t one single moment, but the collection of them — the energy before a ride, the laughter along the way, and the sense of accomplishment afterward.
Still, there are moments that stay with you.
Gary remembers working with a rider who was trying to learn how to use their gears. There was a language barrier, and it took time. But then, something shifted — understanding clicked, and with it came a moment of pure joy.
“I could see the smile, the light bulb moment as they figured it out.”
It’s those small breakthroughs that seem to matter most. Not just learning a skill, but building confidence.
Over time, Gary has watched many youth grow through the program — from learning the basics to taking their first rides on forest trails, and eventually tackling obstacles they once avoided. Being part of that journey, even in a small way, is what keeps him coming back.
He speaks about it simply — seeing the smiles, watching the progress, and knowing he’s helping create opportunities that might not otherwise exist.
And through it all, the experience brings him back to something many of us forget.
“It all helps remind me of the joy and simplicity of being on your bike in nature.”
When it comes to encouraging others to volunteer, Gary doesn’t overcomplicate it.
“Get involved!”
Because at the end of the day, programs like this only exist because people choose to show up.
“You have the chance as a volunteer to give these kids opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach — all while having fun on your bike in the forest! What could be better?”
We are so grateful to have Gary as part of the TFKO community. Volunteers like him help create a space where youth can build confidence, experience the outdoors, and feel part of something — one ride at a time.

How You Can Be Part of This
Stories like Gary’s don’t happen by accident. They happen because people show up — with time, care, and generosity.
If you’re feeling curious, we invite you to consider volunteering with Trips for Kids Ottawa. There are many ways to get involved, from guiding youth on rides or skating sessions to supporting the organization behind the scenes.
And if volunteering isn’t possible right now, becoming part of our GEM – Giving Every Month community or making a donation helps ensure youth have access to bikes, skates, equipment, and supportive leaders.
Every form of support matters. Every contribution helps create moments like these.
