Some people volunteer for a season. Others discover something that quietly becomes part of who they are.
For Mike Jamieson, that connection began with Cat Weaver. Like so many people who become involved with Trips for Kids Ottawa, Mike was drawn in by Cat's commitment, enthusiasm, and belief in the work.
"You see her commitment and enthusiasm for the cause and you can't help but want to be a part of it."
Over the years, Mike has worn many hats. In addition to leading rides and volunteering with the skating program, he has served as both a Board Director and Board President. Yet despite those leadership roles, he discovered where he feels most connected to the mission.
"Leading rides and skating are what I enjoy most. That's where I feel most connected to the mission."
Being out on the trails and at the rink, watching young people challenge themselves and grow in confidence, is what has kept him coming back season after season.
One experience stands out above all others. Mike says the rides with youth from the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre have left a lasting impression on him.
Watching young people encourage one another, celebrate each other's successes, and simply enjoy the freedom of being outdoors reminds us that these rides are about far more than cycling. They create space for confidence, connection, healing, and hope. Seeing the youth support one another as they navigate their recovery journey is something Mike says has stayed with him ever since.
Over the years, volunteering with Trips for Kids Ottawa has become more than something Mike does. It's simply part of the rhythm of his life.
"Spring and Fall we're out doing school rides, and Winter brings the skating program. I simply can't imagine not doing it. What could I possibly be doing that's more worthwhile?"
That same sense of purpose is reflected in the friendships he's built along the way. Through TFKO, Mike has become part of a welcoming community of volunteers who share a love of cycling, the outdoors, and giving back. Many of those friendships have extended beyond the organization, making TFKO not only a place to volunteer, but a community to belong to.
For anyone considering volunteering, Mike hopes they'll discover the same sense of connection he has.
"It's a wonderful community of people... and if you know Cat at all, you already know it's a well-organized, fun, and meaningful place to spend your time, helping some truly great kids."
We are incredibly grateful for Mike's years of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Trips for Kids Ottawa. Whether serving as a Board Director, Board President, leading rides through the forest, lacing up skates at the rink, or simply showing up season after season, Mike has helped create opportunities for hundreds of young people to experience the joy, confidence, and sense of belonging that come from getting outdoors and being part of a caring community.
Thank you, Mike, for making Trips for Kids Ottawa part of the rhythm of your life, and for helping so many young people discover the confidence, connection, and joy that come from simply getting outside together.
